As the mobile phone market develops, display manufacturers continue to develop new touchscreen solutions to provide customers with thinner, brighter, and more cost-effective displays. According to the types of touch technology of mobile phone screens currently on the market, we can divide them into in-cell, on-cell and out-cell, including OGS, G+G and G+F.

There are many kinds of replacement screens, and the quality is uneven, which makes many consumers confused when placing an order. How do we choose the right product for us? What is the difference between them?

Here, we will focus on the two qualities of in-cell and on-cell, and analyze their differences in all aspects.

The composition of the mobile phone screen

We can simply see that the mobile phone screen is generally composed of a protective cover glass, a touch screen layer, and a liquid crystal panel.

What is In-cell?

In-cell is composed of a glass cover, front polarizer, touch layer + LCD, rear polarizer, and backlight. A separate touch IC is added to the display layer to ensure the normal operation of the touch function.

What is On-Cell?

Common LCD technology consists of protective glass, touch layer, air layer, and display layer. On-Cell places the ITO touch film on the upper glass substrate of the display, reducing the air layer and touch layer.

Therefore, the structures of in-cell and on-cell are similar. These two qualities are that the structure of the protective glass layer + the display panel layer has one less touch layer, and these two qualities will be lighter and thinner.

On-Cell  VS  In-Cell

The biggest difference between On-Cell and In-Cell is whether the touch unit/module shown in the above figure is above or below the "CF (filter layer)".

For designs like On-Cell, the touch layer is placed on the In the upper position of the four-layer structure of the display layer, there is a layer of color filter substrate between it and the liquid crystal pixels. Unlike the In-Cell technology, the touch unit is embedded in the liquid crystal layer.

So what is the difference between them in other functions?

Visual effects:

In theory, because of the different placement of the sensor, the In-Cell screen is slightly clearer than the On-Cell screen.

thickness:

The thickness of the In-Cell is thinner than that of the On-Cell

Screen Strength:

On-Cell is more drop resistant than In-Cell. In-Cell fuses the touch layer with the liquid crystal layer. If the touchscreen is damaged, the monitor must be replaced together. while On-Cell will not

Difficulty making:

Early In-Cells were more difficult to control production than On-Cells. As the In-Cell manufacturing process matures, both In-Cell and On-Cell production control technologies tend to stabilize. Now both of these qualities have been stable and applied to the market.

Touch Sensitivity:

The In-Cell screen directly fuses the touch layer and the liquid crystal layer together, and the induction noise is large. Filtering and correction processing requires a special touch chip.

Yield rate:

With the continuous precipitation of process technology over time, the yield rate of In-Cell and On-Cell screens has been at the same level, and large-scale shipments are not a problem.

Difference Summary

Quality: On-cell < In-cell

Price: On-cell < In-cell

Thickness: On-cell > In-cell
